About This Resource
The Vatican Museums Spiral Staircase is one of the most photographed staircases in the world. Often mistakenly called the Bramante Staircase (which is a different, older staircase), the modern spiral staircase was designed by Giuseppe Momo in 1932. It features a double helix design, with one spiral for ascending and one for descending, allowing people to use both directions without crossing paths. The bronze railings, ornate decorations, and the view from above or below create stunning geometric patterns. The staircase has become an iconic symbol of the Vatican Museums and demonstrates how functional architecture can achieve artistic masterpiece status.
