About This Resource
Valparaíso, Chile is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic hillside setting on 42 hills (cerros) overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The city features an extensive network of staircases connecting the port area to hilltop neighborhoods, many decorated with colorful street art and murals. In addition to countless stairs, Valparaíso has 15 historic funicular elevators (ascensores) dating from the late 1800s. The stairs and funiculars are essential infrastructure for residents and have become iconic symbols of the city's unique urban character. The combination of steep topography, Victorian architecture, and vibrant street art makes Valparaíso's staircases particularly photogenic.
