About This Resource
Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang) is Bhutan's most iconic landmark, a monastery complex built on a sheer cliff face 900 meters above the Paro Valley floor. The site is reached via a challenging 5-6 hour round trip hike including steep stairs, particularly the final ascent to the monastery. Legend says Guru Rinpoche flew to the site on a tiger's back in the 8th century. The dramatic setting, spiritual significance, and physical challenge make this one of the world's most spectacular pilgrimage destinations. The stairs carved into the mountainside provide the only access to this sacred site.
