About This Resource
Tianmen Mountain in Hunan Province features the famous 'Stairway to Heaven', a steep climb of 999 steps leading to Tianmen Cave (Heaven's Gate), a natural hole through the mountain. The number 999 has cultural significance in Chinese tradition, representing eternity and longevity. The stairs are extremely steep with an average incline of 45 degrees, rising 300 vertical meters. At the top, visitors pass through the spectacular natural arch. The mountain is also known for its glass walkway and the winding mountain road (99 bends) used for approach. The dramatic setting and challenging stairs have made this one of China's most popular tourist attractions.
