Tacoma Historic Public Staircases

About This Resource

Tacoma, Washington, built on hills rising from Commencement Bay, developed an extensive network of public staircases in the early 20th century. These stairs connected streetcar lines and provided pedestrian access to hillside neighborhoods. Many of Tacoma's stairs feature beautiful craftsmanship with concrete, brick, and stone construction. While some have been lost to neglect or development, preservation efforts have focused attention on maintaining these historic pedestrian routes. Notable stairways include those in the Stadium and North End districts. Tacoma's stairs represent an important part of the city's pedestrian heritage.
