About This Resource
St. Peter's Basilica dome, designed by Michelangelo, offers a climb of 551 steps from the basilica floor (or 320 steps if taking the elevator to the roof level first). The stairs wind between the inner and outer shells of the dome, becoming increasingly narrow and steep. Climbers pass through the lantern area and emerge at the very top with spectacular 360-degree views over Vatican City and Rome. The climb provides close-up views of the dome's interior mosaics and construction. Despite the physical challenge, the dome climb is one of the most popular Vatican experiences, combining architectural appreciation with breathtaking views.
