About This Resource
Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress in Sri Lanka featuring a dramatic climb of approximately 1,200 steps to reach the palace ruins at the summit of a massive 200-meter (660-foot) granite rock. Built in the 5th century AD by King Kashyapa, the site includes stairs carved into the rock face, metal staircases attached to sheer cliffs, and passages through enormous lion paws (from which the name Sigiriya, 'Lion Rock', derives). The climb includes steep sections and exposed stairs with dramatic drops. At the summit are the ruins of the ancient palace and spectacular panoramic views. Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka's most important archaeological sites.
