About This Resource
San Diego, with its numerous canyons and hillside neighborhoods, has developed an extensive network of public staircases. These stairs connect neighborhoods separated by topographic challenges and provide pedestrian access through the city's canyon park system. Notable stairway areas include stairs in Mission Hills connecting to Presidio Park, Bankers Hill stairs, and numerous canyon stairs throughout residential areas. Many of these stairs offer scenic views and have become popular walking and fitness routes. The stairs represent an important piece of pedestrian infrastructure in a car-centric city and provide connections that would otherwise require long detours by road.
