About This Resource
The Hidden Garden Steps are a 148-step mosaic tile installation on 16th Avenue in San Francisco's Inner Sunset neighborhood. Inspired by the success of the nearby 16th Avenue Tiled Steps, this project features designs of flowering plants, insects, reptiles, and birds native to San Francisco. Artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher again led the effort with community volunteers. The project took 5 years and was completed in 2013. Like its predecessor, the Hidden Garden Steps have become a beloved neighborhood landmark and tourist destination, showcasing how public art can transform utilitarian infrastructure into community treasures.
