About This Resource
Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto is famous for its thousands of vermillion torii gates that form tunnels along the pathways and stairs climbing Mount Inari. The hiking trail includes numerous stairs winding up the 233-meter mountain, with the full circuit taking 2-3 hours. The gates, donated by businesses and individuals, line the entire path creating one of Japan's most photographed scenes. The stairs pass smaller shrines and fox statues (foxes are the messengers of Inari). The combination of spiritual significance, striking visual beauty, and physical challenge makes this one of Japan's most popular tourist destinations. The stairs and gates represent devotion through both monetary donation and physical pilgrimage.
