About This Resource
9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs are held annually across the United States and internationally, where firefighters climb the equivalent of 110 stories (2,071 steps) in full turnout gear to honor the 343 FDNY firefighters who perished in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. These emotional events combine physical challenge with memorial tribute. Participants often carry badges with names of fallen firefighters. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation coordinates many events, raising funds for firefighter safety and family support. The stair climbs demonstrate how stairs serve as sites of commemoration and how physical challenge can embody remembrance.
