About This Resource
Dutch artist M.C. Escher (1898-1972) created some of the most famous artistic depictions of staircases. His lithographs 'Relativity' (1953) shows a world with multiple gravity sources where figures walk on stairs in different orientations, and 'Ascending and Descending' (1960) features the impossible Penrose stairs in an endless loop. These works explore mathematical concepts, impossible objects, and altered perspectives. Escher's staircase imagery has profoundly influenced popular culture, appearing in films, album covers, and architectural discussions. The works demonstrate how staircases serve as powerful symbols for exploring concepts of infinity, paradox, and the nature of reality.
