Escadaria Selarón - Rio de Janeiro

About This Resource

The Escadaria Selarón (Selarón Steps) are a set of 215 steps in Rio de Janeiro connecting the Lapa and Santa Teresa neighborhoods. Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón began decorating the stairs with colorful tiles in 1990 as a tribute to the Brazilian people. Over 23 years, he covered the stairs with over 2,000 tiles collected from around the world, creating a constantly evolving work of art. The stairs feature predominantly red, green, and yellow tiles (colors of the Brazilian flag) mixed with tiles from over 60 countries. The Selarón Steps have become one of Rio's most photographed landmarks and a symbol of artistic dedication. Selarón worked on the stairs until his death in 2013.
