El Castillo Pyramid Stairs - Chichen Itza, Mexico

About This Resource

El Castillo (The Castle) at Chichen Itza is the iconic stepped pyramid of the Maya civilization. Each of the four sides has 91 steps, totaling 364, plus the platform making 365 - representing the days of the solar year. The stairs are steep and were originally climbed by priests and sacrificial victims. Climbing was allowed until 2006 when it was closed for preservation after a tourist fatality. The pyramid demonstrates sophisticated astronomical knowledge and religious architecture. During equinoxes, the setting sun creates a shadow pattern on the stairs resembling a serpent descending. Chichen Itza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
