About This Resource
Chand Baori is one of India's most spectacular stepwells, located in the village of Abhaneri, Rajasthan. Built in the 9th century, the structure features 3,500 narrow steps arranged in precise geometric patterns descending 13 stories (about 100 feet) to the water level. The stepwell was built to provide reliable water access in the arid region and served as a cool gathering place during hot summers. The symmetrical design and sheer number of steps create a mesmerizing visual effect. Chand Baori represents the sophisticated water management systems developed in ancient India and has become a popular photography subject and tourist destination. The structure has also appeared in films including The Dark Knight Rises.
